Nairobi, Kenya – The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) Chief Executive Officer, Dr. F. M. Siyoi, today signed a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), marking a major milestone in the governmentโ€™s efforts to enhance trade facilitation and regulatory efficiency.

The agreement, finalized after a two-year collaboration involving 24 Partner Government Agencies (PGAs), aims to streamline sea cargo clearance processes, boost transparency, and promote coordinated service delivery in line with Kenyaโ€™s National Trade Facilitation Agenda and the World Trade Organization (WTO) Trade Facilitation Agreement.

The SLA sets out clear roles, timelines, and joint processes among the agencies, with a focus on improving accountability and operational efficiency at the ports.

Speaking at the signing, Dr. Siyoi welcomed the agreement, noting that the partnership will strengthen PPBโ€™s role in ensuring access to quality, safe, and efficacious health products and technologies entering the country.

The KRA delegation was led by Ms. Winfred Kinyua, Assistant Manager, Customs and Border Control.

Nairobi, KENYA – Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) CEO Dr. Fred M. Siyoi has called for urgent and unified regional action to combat the growing threat of illicit health products and technologies across East Africa.

Speaking at the official opening of the Operation African Star 2 workshop in Nairobi, on July 10, 2025 Dr. Siyoi warned that the surge in counterfeit, diverted, and illegally imported medicines is undermining public health, destabilizing economies, and weakening confidence in national health systems.

โ€œThe illicit trade in health products is a transnational crisis that thrives on regulatory gaps and weak coordination,โ€ said Dr. Siyoi. โ€œIt endangers lives and cannot be tackled in isolation. We must move as one.โ€

Citing the success of Operation African Star 1 in June 2024โ€”which intercepted falsified pharmaceuticals smuggled through small courier parcelsโ€”Dr. Siyoi credited enhanced intelligence-sharing and coordinated enforcement across East Africa as key to disrupting these illegal networks.

He also spotlighted Kenyaโ€™s pilot of the Pharmaceutical Authentication and Traceability Program (PATP) as a transformative step in supply chain oversight. โ€œPATP allows regulators to track medicines from production to patient, detect counterfeits in real time, and take rapid enforcement or recall action,โ€ he said.

โ€œOperation African Star 2 reaffirms our shared commitment to protecting the public from harmful products and ensuring access to safe, quality-assured health products and technologies,โ€ Dr. Siyoi added. โ€œWe are embracing digitization, including AI-powered tools, to fast-track a robust track and trace system that enhances supply chain integrity across the region.โ€

Aligned with global standards, the initiative is designed to increase transparency, bolster regulatory vigilance, and protect patients. Dr. Siyoi emphasized that success depends on strong collaboration among regulators, logistics providers, ICT partners, manufacturers, and end users.

The multi-agency workshop brings together a range of stakeholders, including Ugandaโ€™s National Drug Authority, USAID-OIG, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), GS1, Novartis, and others.

Calling on delegates to deepen regional collaboration, Dr. Siyoi urged joint field exercises, shared data platforms, and harmonized regulatory frameworks to address the evolving threats. โ€œLet us protect lives, restore trust, and take decisive action in the fight against illicit medicines,โ€ he said.

The two day workshop, focuses on practical, cross-border strategies to secure pharmaceutical supply chains and safeguard consumers across East Africa.

Nairobi, KENYA – The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB), in partnership with PATH, on Thursday 3rd July 2025 conducted a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) training for local pharmaceutical manufacturers as part of ongoing efforts to enhance regulatory standards in Kenya.

The training comes at a critical time as the country works toward attaining World Health Organisation (WHO) Maturity Level 3, a key milestone in regulatory capacity.

The session was officiated by Dr. Antony Toroitich, Director of Corporate Services, who represented the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. F. M. Siyoi. In his remarks, Dr. Toroitich underscored the need to address gaps identified during GMP inspections and to support the growth of a robust local pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.

He reaffirmed PPBโ€™s commitment to safeguarding public health by ensuring that all health products and technologies (HPTs) manufactured locally meet the highest standards of safety, quality, and efficacy through sustained capacity building and strategic partnerships.

Mombasa, Kenya: The regulatory session at the 45th Annual Scientific Conference of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK), held on June 20, 2025, provided a dynamic platform for discussion on strengthening pharmaceutical regulation in Kenya. Chaired by Dr. F. M. Siyoi, Chief Executive Officer of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB), the session highlighted key regulatory developments and ongoing reforms.

In his opening remarks, PPB Chairman Dr. Charles Githinji reaffirmed the Boardโ€™s firm commitment to supporting pharmacists across all practice areas. โ€œWe are focused. We are listening. And I assure youโ€”your concerns will be addressed through strong, responsive, and technically grounded leadership to make pharmacy thrive,โ€ he stated.

Regulation is a core mandate of government, and I am personally committed to ensuring full implementation of the commitments we make,โ€ he added.

The session featured strong participation from key PPB directoratesโ€”Health Products and Technologies, Corporate Services, and Pharmacy Practiceโ€”who outlined ongoing regulatory progress. Dr. Siyoi reiterated the Boardโ€™s dedication to elevating regulatory standards nationwide and noted that PPB is at an advanced stage in its pursuit of World Health Organization (WHO) Maturity Level 3 status.
